Finding future in

chicago's past

The NAME

The thompson at fulton market

Our name sounds deceivingly simple. But the history of Fulton Market isn't that clear cut. The location that is now an exciting, edgy restaurant row was once a place of meat packing and open-air markets. The bones of the now-retrofitted hospital give structure to the newly build apartments. The rest of the apartments' glass and masonry materials are a modern call-out to the Fulton Market neighborhood aesthetic.

With this name, we acknowledge what and who has come before us, and look forward to serving the next pioneers of the area.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Mary H. Thompson

The woman

Mary h. thompson

Mary H. Thompson was a woman dedicated to progress and advocacy. As the first woman to practice medicine in Chicago, her dedication to serving women and children in healthcare left a legacy of courage, determination, and innovation that has long outlived her.

After receiving her medical degree in 1863, Thompson moved to a very new Chicago from New York. Yet, women were not yet allowed to be part of hospital staff in Chicago. She then found her own hospital, built specifically to serve women and children, where she became chief surgeon and physician, and head of staff- roles she kept for the rest of her life.

Among her innovations and accolades (apart from paving the way for female medical doctors in Chicago) Thompson was also a member of the American Medical Association (AMA), was the first women to present a paper on childhood diseases to the AMA, and she invented several surgical instruments used during her time.

the spirit

determined pioneer, restorative innovator

For something to be restorative, it's a place of healing- or, it's taking something of value an revitalizing it. In our new community, built around a portion of the Mary H. Thompson Hospital, we hope to strive toward the future, while acknowledging what's come before. All should not be lost, it should be celebrated. All while we lean forward, pioneering the next thing around the corner.

Will your next step be a return to what's come before? Or a reaction to it? What if it could be both?
